Great trekking in the south of La Palma

Located between the central and southern regions of the island of La Palma, the Ruta of the Volcanoes has great natural trekking and because of this it was originally an important communication route between the island’s regions. This pathway, conditioned and signposted, goes through the municipalities of El Paso, Mazo and Fuencaliente within Cumbre Vieja National Park. Given the little vegetation and demanding inclines, it is highly advisable to wear suitable clothing, good mountain footwear and head protection. It is also important to take enough food and plenty of water for a six-eight hours hike.

A demanding hike among volcanoes and native animals

At 17.5 kilometres long, the itinerary of the Volcano Route has a rise of 1,207 metres. Its natural route varies between an altitude of 725 metres in Fuencaliente and 1,932 metres maximum at the summit. The way is along paths, forest tracks and roads. The trek allows one to contemplate the island’s two aspects and with a bit of luck, native animal species such as the rook and kestrel.
